The Story Behind My America
While living in Virginia I found a part time position working as a photographer. Our main focus was covering youth sports. We worked most weekends capturing the area's youth as they sweated it out on the field. We were hired to not only snap their team picture but also to get some interesting action shots. I was on my way to a youth sporting complex for a photoshoot one Saturday morning when I witnessed the most amazing mix of sunrise and fog. I wanted so badly to grab my camera and pull over to the side of the highway. Unfortunately, I had to get to the field so continued on. As soon as I pulled into the field area and saw how the light spilled around the goal post, I knew I had no choice. I was mesmerized by the beautiful sight before me. I grabbed my camera and took a series of shots. Looking back at the images and thinking about that day, I can’t help but think America, your America, my America. What screams America for so many of us? A Saturday filled with youth sporting events! For so many, a typical Fall Saturday morning means lugging your offspring to the football field for a day of fun and friendly competition. It's a time and place where you meet up with your neighbors or make a new friend while watching the littles run across the field. It’s the smell of hot dogs & burgers as they start to fill the air. Babies crawling around in the puddles. Kids being kids. Adults reliving their youth, thinking about a simpler time.
