The Story Behind My America
Just about every Sunday evening during the Summer you’d find me driving back from the coast heading back home to the Fort Bragg neighborhood that I called home. I tried to get away every chance I got. I wasn’t alone, each Sunday evening, just before sunset, there would be a long line of vehicles making their way back to Ft. Bragg. Memories of salty air, sandy toes and gentle winds fresh on the mind. Two hours drive would leave plenty of time to think. Inevitably, that knot-in-the-stomach feeling would start to work it’s way into my thoughts each mile marker that I passed by. What a strange and foreign world that I was living in during that time. A temporary neighborhood, temporary community, my life on hold once again. The location of the bridge and railroad tracks were about half way from the beach to my Fayetteville home. It symbolizes the sadness that I felt inside when having to make that trip home each weekend. I wanted to stay on that beach forever. Military life. Military wife. My America.
