The Story Behind My America
I’ve had the opportunity to hike many miles of the North Carolina Appalachian Trail, and this particular spot is one of my favorite places on Earth. The building to the right is Overmountain Shelter, a barn-turned-hiking-shelter named for the “Overmountain Men” who, in 1780 crossed these mountains into North Carolina to fight in the Revolutionary War. I think these mountains embody the American spirit of exploration that inspired the first settlers to cross such a formidable obstacle seeking a better life and inspires us today to trek through this difficult terrain to enjoy such a beautiful slice of nature. The view of the valley from Overmountain Shelter is a nearly untouched wilderness, and that’s America to me.
