In 2013 developed an ides of trying to assist veterans in the Sandhills. Out of those thoughts has come A Stroke of Patriotism and are now entering our 4th year of fundraising to assist those veterans who need a 'Hand Up' as opposed those who are looking for a hand out.
The Story Behind My America
These four flags encapsulate a critical period in our nation’s history that helped define the America we know and love. In 1607 we saw the first English settlement in Jamestown. Then, in Yorktown in 1781 Lord General Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington ending the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Bull Run, the first ground battle of the Civil War was partly fought on the farm of Wilmer McLean and took place in 1861. Finally, General Lee surrendered to General Grant at the house of Wilmer Mclean, ending the Civil War in 1865. These four events, all in Virginia, are marked on my painting by the American flag at the time plus the first Confederate flag and the Union Jack.
