Your ProfileTommy McDonell is an award winning artist living and working in Pinehurst, NC. She has been a member at the Artist League of the Sandhills since 2008, and a studio member since 2009. Originally from New York City, she didn’t take art classes until 2007. Tommy won her first honorable mention with the first watercolor she did on her own, prior to moving to Pinehurst. Most recently her painting, “Tale of Two Cities”, a collage, won first place in Mixed Media in June at the Artist League of the Sandhills. And she won an Honorable Mention in Mixed Media at the Arts Council of Moore County (ACMC) in August, 2017, and a Second Place in a 2015. The Story Behind Your PaintingIn order to paint something for Patriotic Expressions, I reviewed my photos from parades, and perused photos on Pixabay that were categorized as patriotism, American Flags, Soldiers, etc. I also brainstormed words and phrases. As an abstract artist, I wanted to do something that had symbols, rather than actual pictures. For some reason, the idea of the Silver Star came to my mind. To me, every soldier, whether he or she goes to war, or serves in one of the armed forces, is a hero. He or she should be considered a Patriot’s Star. It is to them that I dedicate this painting.
