Your Profile
Joan Williams credits her passion for art and design to her father and grandfather. She began drawing at a very early age with help on perspective from her father and love of wildlife through the paintings of her grandfather. She considers herself a self-taught impressionistic artist but has studied with many nationally recognized artists throughout the years. Her love of lights and darks, use of rich saturated color and her bold application of paints help create the feelings the scene evokes … a very “painterly” fashion full of life and light. Her works hang in both private and corporate collections in the US and abroad. Joan currently lives in Gainesville, Florida; gives private instruction; is a member of the Oil Painters of American, the Artists League of the Sandhills, in North Carolina and a member of the Gainesville Fine Arts Association.
The Story Behind Your Painting
Joan was inspired to paint “One Nation Under God” from personal views that are important to her. The flag was given to her mother when her uncle was buried - he had served in WWII; the bible is a very old family heirloom, and the prayer cross was made by her husband, John. John made a cross for Joan and her sister, Jane, when Jane was diagnosed with her second round of cancer. These three items evoke in Joan what Stroke of Patriotism symbolizes ….. the flag - a nation with liberties and freedom for all given from God; the Bible – a reference book of how we each should live our lives; the handheld prayer cross – a help in bringing calmness and serenity to prayers.
